CONQUER: THE DEEP SIDE PART

The deep side part is a great way to change up your look and create maximum style with minimum effort. The deep side part works great

with all hair types. Rock star, retro, or formal. Whether you are rocking it with loose waves and a braid or wearing it stick straight, this is the deep side part with a little edge.

The style of old Hollywood stars with the deep side part. Creating a deep side part with soft retro waves gives a sexy, gorgeous look. We love the retro look of Blake Lively and Jessica Alba.

Our own stylist Alex wears the deep side part perfectly

and we see our clients trying
this new trend too.

It's a new year! Let's have some fun!

Ombre is Here to Stay

Ombre, Should it stay? Or go?
Ombre (or some version of it) has been one of the most requested color services at Salon on the Ave since the trend became mainstream. Clients have been inspired by all the celebrities that jumped on board with the trend, and who doesn't love the easy grow out?  But like any lasting trend, the look has to evolve to remain current and not look dated.
That being said, we love the direction that ombre is moving into, and if you ask us, we think the look (when done right) is here to stay awhile longer.
2010 versions of ombre…

Note the high contrast of the dark roots and light ends.  The look is basically a dark root shade  and very light ends that meet somewhere below the cheek bone.  The 2 colors slightly smudge together at their meeting point.

Now, let’s view the NEW OMBRE -

To create the new ombre look, bring inspiration pics of your favorite hair colors and ask your colorist for balayage  highlights.  Balayage is a French word that means “to sweep”.  When you get balayage highlights,  your colorist will hand paint select pieces of hair resulting in a totally custom hair color effect that accents the shape and movement of your haircut.  Since the highlights are expertly placed, and so softly diffused at the root area, the regrowth ends up being less harsh than other highlighting techniques.

You've Never Had a Hair Color Service Before?

We have a special just in time for fall. We are offering 10 highlight foils for $30. You would really be surprised how 10 little foils can add dimension to your hair. It allows you to experiment with color-without having the commitment that having more highlights entails. The regrowth doesn't show up and if you decide that once was enough then you can just let it grow out without any more visits.

We also have a special that's 15.00 off your hair color/haircut visit. This special runs Monday- Thursday. We can't offer it on Friday or Saturday because it's crazy on those days and we are trying to reward you for coming in during the weekdays. ;)

Do a little homework at home. Find examples on Pinterest or Google Images. Bring those pictures in and during the consultation we discuss how we can achieve that look.

Not all highlights are created equal. You can get a very fine weave done. We pick up a few threads of hair and the result is an overall look of a lighter color without looking like ribbons of hair color.
We can also pick up thicker pieces of hair and it looks more like ribbons of color throughout your natural color. The possibilities are endless. We love color! It can make a subtle change or dramatic- You choose.

Call us 801.404.5205 Tell us when you schedule that you saw this special on our blog. It's that easy. Sorry that we can't combine with other specials.

Growing Out Your Lovely Lady Locks

After being a hairstylist for 8 years, and the entire time I have bleached out my hair completely. I loved it, and I love being blonde. The downside to such a harsh chemical treatment for so long is that, you can't grow your hair long. It keeps damaging, roughing up the cuticle, weakening it, and breaking off. Leaving me with never longer than shoulder length hair (without extensions).
My journey to healthier hair, so that I can grow it has consisted of these helpful hints:

-First, I stopped with the all-over bleach and tone. I will never be ready to give up my blonde locks completely, but I started to do a foil weave instead, I had to put some of my natural color back in. Get a little bit of pigment back in there (No worries! I'm still mostly blonde! :))
-Second, you MUST start deep conditioning your hair, ONCE A WEEK. No exceptions. I do this every Monday, on my day off. While showering, shampoo your hair, then saturate your hair really well with "Its a 10" Mask. Clip it up, and put a shower cap on. Finish the rest of your showerly duties, get out, and go about your chores in the house. I like to keep this in my hair for a good hour or so.

-Third, Rinse with COOL water. Hot water opens the cuticle, cold water closes it. You want your cuticle to close around the conditioning goodness you just did!
-Fourth, gently towel dry your hair, spray in the "Its a 10" miracle leave-in conditioner. You can see a picture posted in a previous post. I use the leave-in specially formulated for blondes!
-Fifth, I always follow up with Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum. Protect my strands from the harsh weather, heat, and whatever else we put our hair through. Apply evenly through the shaft and ends. You don't want this stuff on your roots, it will appear greasy. It smooths, seals, protects, and smells amazing!
Sixth, healthy diet and exercise. Duh, we all know this. What we put in our bodies, show up what is on the outside. Exercise stimulates blood flow. I also add this supplement to my daily diet and routine. Yes, that's Biotin 10,000mcg, the highest dosage you can get. What can I say, I'm desperate for my own long lovely lady locks! The happy nails is a bonus..

-Seventh, I use the blow dryer next to never. Except for my bangs of course. If I don't, well you know how it goes, they get a mind of their own, and we can't have that. Otherwise, I just let my hair air dry. I typically shower at night so that this is possible. In the morning, I kinda just take a curling iron in some places and go with the wave and curl that sleeping on it gave me. The less heat the better. Luckily we live in a time where accepting and working with your natural texture is the thing to do. Embrace it! Learn to work with it, and if you can't figure it out, call us at the salon. Schedule a styling appointment. We will help you figure out how to love your natural locks.

These are the most important steps I have noticed to be of big help in my quest for lush long hair, and still be as blonde as possible. Hope some of these tips help! :)

Product Spotlight

Its A 10 Miracle Leave in

We'd like to take a moment to spotlight one of our favorite products, It's a 10 Miracle leave-in Conditioner. It's a top seller at Salon on the Ave. I personally use it every time I wash my hair. First thing I do when I get out of the shower is squeeze out the excess water from my hair, towel dry it, then spray about 6 pumps of It's a 10 into my damp hair.  I let it sit there for a bit before brushing out my hair and it really helps to detangle. Then just comb it through your hair and style as usual.

The 10 Benefits of It's A 10

  • Repair dry, damaged hair
  • Adds shine
  • Detangles
  • Control Frizz
  • Seals & protects hair color
  • Prevents split ends
  • Stops hair breakage
  • Creates silkiness
  • Enhances natural body
  • Flat iron spray & thermal protector

Can one product really do all that? Sound too good to be true? I thought so too, until I gave it a try. Now I can't live without it. If it's not your thing to use a whole bunch of different products or spend the money on several products then It's a 10 is perfect for you!

Come and see us at Salon on the Ave. We have It's a 10 for the best price around!

THE PERFECT LOOSE CURL LOOK

The loose curl hairstyle is still a hot trend! Luckily it is one of the easiest styles to do! As a Hairstylist I'm doing hair all day long, so when it comes to my own hair.... I get a little bit lazy :/ So this is one of my go to hairstyles. From wet head to dried perfection takes me about 15 min. (time will vary depending on how long it takes your hair to dry). So here goes the loose curl tutorial!

prepping hair for curling:

  1. Wash hair, Towel-dry and comb hair out.
  2. Prepping hair for the style is very important. using the right products are extremely important! (but we will save that for another post ;) the products i use in my hair are It's a 10 leave-in conditioner, heat Seal (to protect against heat damage) and Paul Mitchell the cream (for extra hold).
  3. Flip hair over your head and blow dry straight. Hair must be completely dry for this look to work. Blow cold air at the roots to add volume (cold air locks in a style)

curling Process:
For a more relaxed look: Don't hold the iron on your hair as long and avoid curling the tips.  For a more curled look: Leave the iron your hair longer and curl the tips.

Let your hair cool completely

Next make sure you brush through your hair with your fingers or a comb to break up the Perfect Curl Look

Lastly,  Spray with Hair Spray!
