Growing Out Your Lovely Lady Locks

After being a hairstylist for 8 years, and the entire time I have bleached out my hair completely. I loved it, and I love being blonde. The downside to such a harsh chemical treatment for so long is that, you can't grow your hair long. It keeps damaging, roughing up the cuticle, weakening it, and breaking off. Leaving me with never longer than shoulder length hair (without extensions).
My journey to healthier hair, so that I can grow it has consisted of these helpful hints:

-First, I stopped with the all-over bleach and tone. I will never be ready to give up my blonde locks completely, but I started to do a foil weave instead, I had to put some of my natural color back in. Get a little bit of pigment back in there (No worries! I'm still mostly blonde! :))
-Second, you MUST start deep conditioning your hair, ONCE A WEEK. No exceptions. I do this every Monday, on my day off. While showering, shampoo your hair, then saturate your hair really well with "Its a 10" Mask. Clip it up, and put a shower cap on. Finish the rest of your showerly duties, get out, and go about your chores in the house. I like to keep this in my hair for a good hour or so.

-Third, Rinse with COOL water. Hot water opens the cuticle, cold water closes it. You want your cuticle to close around the conditioning goodness you just did!
-Fourth, gently towel dry your hair, spray in the "Its a 10" miracle leave-in conditioner. You can see a picture posted in a previous post. I use the leave-in specially formulated for blondes!
-Fifth, I always follow up with Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum. Protect my strands from the harsh weather, heat, and whatever else we put our hair through. Apply evenly through the shaft and ends. You don't want this stuff on your roots, it will appear greasy. It smooths, seals, protects, and smells amazing!
Sixth, healthy diet and exercise. Duh, we all know this. What we put in our bodies, show up what is on the outside. Exercise stimulates blood flow. I also add this supplement to my daily diet and routine. Yes, that's Biotin 10,000mcg, the highest dosage you can get. What can I say, I'm desperate for my own long lovely lady locks! The happy nails is a bonus..

-Seventh, I use the blow dryer next to never. Except for my bangs of course. If I don't, well you know how it goes, they get a mind of their own, and we can't have that. Otherwise, I just let my hair air dry. I typically shower at night so that this is possible. In the morning, I kinda just take a curling iron in some places and go with the wave and curl that sleeping on it gave me. The less heat the better. Luckily we live in a time where accepting and working with your natural texture is the thing to do. Embrace it! Learn to work with it, and if you can't figure it out, call us at the salon. Schedule a styling appointment. We will help you figure out how to love your natural locks.

These are the most important steps I have noticed to be of big help in my quest for lush long hair, and still be as blonde as possible. Hope some of these tips help! :)

Product Spotlight

Its A 10 Miracle Leave in

We'd like to take a moment to spotlight one of our favorite products, It's a 10 Miracle leave-in Conditioner. It's a top seller at Salon on the Ave. I personally use it every time I wash my hair. First thing I do when I get out of the shower is squeeze out the excess water from my hair, towel dry it, then spray about 6 pumps of It's a 10 into my damp hair.  I let it sit there for a bit before brushing out my hair and it really helps to detangle. Then just comb it through your hair and style as usual.

The 10 Benefits of It's A 10

  • Repair dry, damaged hair
  • Adds shine
  • Detangles
  • Control Frizz
  • Seals & protects hair color
  • Prevents split ends
  • Stops hair breakage
  • Creates silkiness
  • Enhances natural body
  • Flat iron spray & thermal protector

Can one product really do all that? Sound too good to be true? I thought so too, until I gave it a try. Now I can't live without it. If it's not your thing to use a whole bunch of different products or spend the money on several products then It's a 10 is perfect for you!

Come and see us at Salon on the Ave. We have It's a 10 for the best price around!

THE PERFECT LOOSE CURL LOOK

The loose curl hairstyle is still a hot trend! Luckily it is one of the easiest styles to do! As a Hairstylist I'm doing hair all day long, so when it comes to my own hair.... I get a little bit lazy :/ So this is one of my go to hairstyles. From wet head to dried perfection takes me about 15 min. (time will vary depending on how long it takes your hair to dry). So here goes the loose curl tutorial!

prepping hair for curling:

  1. Wash hair, Towel-dry and comb hair out.
  2. Prepping hair for the style is very important. using the right products are extremely important! (but we will save that for another post ;) the products i use in my hair are It's a 10 leave-in conditioner, heat Seal (to protect against heat damage) and Paul Mitchell the cream (for extra hold).
  3. Flip hair over your head and blow dry straight. Hair must be completely dry for this look to work. Blow cold air at the roots to add volume (cold air locks in a style)

curling Process:
For a more relaxed look: Don't hold the iron on your hair as long and avoid curling the tips.  For a more curled look: Leave the iron your hair longer and curl the tips.

Let your hair cool completely

Next make sure you brush through your hair with your fingers or a comb to break up the Perfect Curl Look

Lastly,  Spray with Hair Spray!

7 Colors for fall

Have you been looking into coloring your hair for fall to switch it up from your summer color? Well we have some great ideas here at Salon on the Ave to help you out! The following are colors that are hot hot hot for fall and will make a big difference.

1.Dimensional Red
Emma Stone is one of our favorite red-heads! Her hair is one of the hottest looks for fall. This coppery dimensional color actually looks great on most skin tones and will match the leaves around you! Great for warming up your skin tone in the cold weather!

2.Buttery Blonde
Butter blonde is actually really rich and bright. It's a perfect hair color if you want to stand out, but if you don't already have lighter hair it can be a little more work to keep up, but worth it!! It typically looks better on people with fair skin or just sun-kissed like Kate's above. Don't forget to amp up your makeup with this new color!

3.Toffee Blonde
Toffee blonde is so pretty in the fall. It's a mix of honey blonde with ribbons of a toffee/caramel color through it. This is personally my favorite color for fall. Add on a long layered cut with this look and you will be full of dimension!

4.Highlights
Changing up your hair for fall can be as simple as adding highlights! We love this chestnut brown hair with highlights. We recommend getting a half or partial weave and leaving the underneath dark. So pretty for fall. Highlights can be harder to keep up with dark hair, but definitely worth it. It changes your hair from blah to bam and gets you noticed!

5.Vibrant Red
If the natural auburn red isn't quite your style, try out this super pretty vibrant red! You're sure to get noticed rocking a color like this! Again, this can be a littler harder to keep up than just a natural color, but this is absolutely one of the best colors for fall and a great way to stand out!

6.Ombre/Color Melt
Ombre will be huge this fall! Especially if you have dark hair and want to vamp up your color with out all the upkeep of highlights or an all over color. You never have to worry about your roots with a color like this! It can be edgy or soft, extreme or subtle! We love this look.

7.Espresso Brown
And finally, the last color that is sure to be hot for fall is espresso brown. It's dark, deep and lasts a really long time! Even when this color starts to fade, it fades nicely. If you are looking for a low-maintenance color that will work with so many different skin tones, this is it!!

Alright, there you have it! 7 colors great for fall! Let us know which is your favorite and if you've already tried one of them! Call and make an appointment with us! Can't wait to see you in!
